The Pilates class that is taught at Auburn Karate School is full-body system of specific sequenced exercises performed on the mat. In the near future, however, we will be incorporating the reformer, wunda chair, and other original Pilates equipment. Pilates is a method of exercise that is centers around the concepts of awareness, balance, breath, centering, concentration, control, flowing movement, and precision. The principle of Pilates is to uniformly develop the body and mind.
The main emphasis is placed on strengthening core muscles and on centered breathing. This allows for postural patterns to be released and restores muscular strength and flexibility with correct alignment. The format of the class is moving at a decent tempo from pose to pose from exercise to exercise. Some exercise are performed seated, some standing. It is recommended that participants be barefoot and use a Yoga style mat. This class is currently taught by Nancy Hillman at Auburn Karate. She is certified to teach Pilates from Power Pilates in Manhattan. Please check the Class Times link for schedule.
